Master in Law

The Master of Laws (LLM) Class at the UGM Faculty of Law is designed to fulfill the need of experts in various areas of law which are significant for Indonesia, both locally and globally. It offers unique modules to enhance the knowledge and ability of the students in analyzing the law in the Indonesian context as well as contributing to the development of law in the global context. Equipped with an LLM degree, our alumni are geared to be capable of filling critical legal posts in a wide array of fields, from multinational corporations to international organizations.

Through our concentration areas, LLM students will be exposed to the expertise of lecturers from UGM's partner universities from around the world. Opportunities are open for numerous exchange and dual degree programs, with tailored schemes to the University of Queensland, Queen Mary University London, Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Leiden, University of Reading, and other prominent universities all over the world.

Mission

The mission of the study program is to:

1. Hold education that can enhance academic knowledge through critical, progressive, and innovative thinking for the development of legal science;
2. Conduct research for the development of legal science and benefits of the society;
3. Perform community service activities in order to improve people’s knowledge and consciousness of law;
4. Develop collaboration in national and international level.

Vision

The vision of the study program is to be a class word, competitive and innovative study program in terms of strengthening legal science within the efforts to serve for the interests of nation and state based on Indonesian cultural, humanity that are in line with Pancasila.

The curriculum at LL.M program comprises of the core, compulsory concentration, and elective courses. Areas of concentration at the LL.M. program consist of business law, international law and law and governance. In accordance with Regulation of the LLM Degree, students are required to complete 45 credits that are divided into the following five types of module:

1. Compulsory modules, consisting of five courses totaling 21 credits;
2. Thematic modules according to four clusters: business law, international law, criminal law and law, and governance. Each cluster offers four courses totaling 12 credits;
3. Elective modules, to be taken outside a student’s thematic course, consisting of four courses totaling 12 credits.

3. Elective Courses (12 credits) Elective courses are to be chosen from any cluster outside a student’s concentration/cluster/thematic area.

General Academic Rules

All students shall obey the General Academic Rules in the Faculty of Law UGM as follows:

1. All students shall fulfill all assignments and attend a minimum of 75% of the total meetings in class. Failure to do so may result in exclusion from Final Examination, which may result in suspension or damage to the final grade, probation, suspension or dismissal.
2. In the event where a lecturer becomes aware that a student has been absent without a valid excuse for more than the Applicable Absence Limitation, such lecturer shall notify the secretariat. The Management, in light of all applicable circumstances and upon consultation with the reporting lecturer, shall decide upon any or all of the following:
   • Exclusion of the student from the course;
   • The bestowal of grade E for that student for that course.
3. Each lecturer is entitled to excuse the absence of a student upon a valid reason. The Vice Dean of Academic and Student Affairs may decide that, on account of extraordinary circumstances affecting an extended period of time, a student be excused for a specified period of time from the meetings of the courses he or she is taking.
4. Each student must commit to the meetings and examinations of all courses in which he or she is registered in the Study Plan (KRS).
5. Forging the signature of another student or a Faculty member or staff for attendance in class or any other purpose is prohibited and considered a criminal offense under the Indonesian Penal Code. A student who has been identified as intentionally having forged a signature of another person for attendance in class may be terminated from enrollment in that particular course.
6. Only students who are appropriately dressed may be admitted into a class or any academic activity at the Faculty.
7. Sleeveless tops, T-shirts, short pants, slippers, and any transparent, ripped or revealing piece of clothing are strictly prohibited in class. A lecturer has the full prerogative to banish a student from class if such student has been found not to adhere to the appropriate clothing standard.
8. Students who are late for more than 15 minutes shall not be admitted into class for any reason.
9. Smoking is prohibited in all designated areas at the campus, and eating in class is prohibited.
10. Mobile phones are generally prohibited in class and during the examination.
11. No student shall record the proceedings of a class meeting without the express consent from the lecturer in charge.

The goal of the study program is to create graduates of high quality and knowledgable in legal science, and able to provide solutions to legal issues emerging within the society.
