Remaking the world: remaking law?

Technology creates situations that were the stuff of fantasy when most of our laws were created. Robots, biotech, autonomous vehicles and weapons, and the endless amassing and crunching of data - what does it mean to be a human being? And how do we relate to each other and to the natural world? These are questions we are forced to ask ourselves again in the face of technological progress. Law shapes and reflects the answers that we find.

Alongside core courses in international technology law, and big data, human rights and security, you will choose from subjects including: international weapons law, biotech and law, robots and artificial intelligence, and blockchain and disruptive tech.... [-]

The modern lawyer: not just the law, but finance and behavior as well

This Master is formerly known as 'Corporate Law: Law Markets and Behavior'.

Lawyers used to only deal with the law. Advise your client on the rules, if need be litigate and you do a good job. In our changing world, this is no longer true. For lawyers to live up to the expectations of clients and society, they need to have broader skills. Lawyers also have to understand the underlying economic principles of transactions and procedures they are involved in. Behavioral perspectives are key in dynamics such as the governance of a company, mergers and acquisitions and the formation of contracts. Global economic shockwaves have demonstrated that rules alone do not suffice; we need to think about ethics as well. In other words: lawyers will fall short by just knowing the legal rules, even if they know them well.... [-]

European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE)

This European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) programme offers the unique opportunity for interdisciplinary studies of law and economics at two or even three European and Non-European universities. Each partner university awards a Master degree (LL.M. / M.A. / M.Sc. or a Joint Degree). The programme provides students with an advanced understanding of the economic effects of divergent laws and prepares students for a professional career, for example, in public organizations, in multinational law firms or consultancy firms. Graduates are also well prepared for doctorate research in a Ph.D. programme such as the European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE). The EMLE has been recognized by the European Commission as an Erasmus + Programme of "outstanding academic quality". The Erasmus + label allows the EMLE programme to annually grant a substantial number of scholarships (including several full scholarships to students from “Partner Countries”). For law students, the knowledge of the specific regulations of their home country is too narrow a base for counseling firms that are active in international trade. Additionally, a familiarity with the economic effects of legal rules has become indispensable for understanding their clients' commercial needs. Similarly, economics students will profit from an accurate understanding of the institutional legal framework of market economies. For both lawyers and economists, knowledge of the other discipline and international contacts are crucial for a successful future career. The EMLE programme is the institutional response to these challenges.... [-]
